Friends,

The COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare the existing inequities for communities of color in Los Angeles County and the importance of workplace health standards for safely reopening the economy, containing the virus, and protecting the public health of everyone who lives and works in our communities. We’ve lost over 6,000 Angelenos to date and know that protecting the public requires a recovery plan centered around workers and the workplace ([link removed]) .

Workplaces serve as gathering points for members of the public, whether that be in an office building, a packaging warehouse, a restaurant, or anywhere else. Public health councils will give Los Angeles County a way to ensure the entire community, including workers, business owners, consumers, and family members are protected from COVID-19.

“I’m a retail worker in Los Angeles and was concerned with how my store responded to its first COVID outbreak. The store was not properly disinfected and cleaning was limited to shopping carts and registers for customers to feel safe and that’s it. The way COVID is dealt with in my workplace is dangerous for the public who shops there and workers who are possibly taking the virus back to their families. That’s why we need legislation that allows workers to form public health councils in their workplaces and ensure health protocols are actually followed.” - Cynthia, Los Angeles retail worker.

It is crucial the L.A. County Board of Supervisors hear from us on this matter of public health. Help us protect the well-being of our communities by contacting your representatives by October 1st and voicing your support for the establishment of public health councils in the workplace.
In Solidarity,

Roxana Tynan

My name is [insert name] and I'm with [insert your organization, union, business, or identify yourself as a county resident]. I live in District [insert district number] and work in District [insert district number].

As our economy reopens, it is imperative that our workplaces comply with County Health Officer orders. Workers urgently need their jobs: without income, many families fear losing their homes. Business owners urgently want to re-open but unsafe protocols in the workplace threaten the health of workers, their families, customers and our communities.

We’ve lost over 6,000 Angelenos to date and many were disproportionately Black, Indigenous, persons of color (BIPOC) in essential jobs forced to choose between their families' health and economic survival. BIPOC make up around three-fourths of the residents living in Los Angeles County and account for 87% of confirmed COVID cases and 77% of confirmed COVID deaths.

We need Public Health Councils as part of the solution toward addressing this racial inequity and for a safe reopening that does not jeopardize people's health, jobs, business operations, and our overall economy.

By serving as the public’s eyes and ears, Public Health Councils will greatly expand the capacity of the County Public Health Department and help us protect our entire community's health, stem any outbreaks, support our economy, and recover from the pandemic.

Thank you for your consideration and leadership.
