Dear John,
Yesterday, Mitt Romney announced that he would not oppose allowing Trump to nominate Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s replacement, defying Justice Ginsburg’s dying wish that she “not be replaced until a new president is installed.”
It now appears that Mitch McConnell has the votes to move a nominee forward to a vote, and some in the media are making it sound like the fight is over.
But John, this fight is not over. For RBG, and for our future, we must see McConnell’s exercise of raw power for what it is and meet it with even greater force.
Trump is scheduled to announce his nominee to replace Justice Ginsburg this Saturday, and while we don’t know who it is yet, it’s clear it will be a far-right idealogue. And only when that nominee is announced will the real battle begin.
As soon as Trump’s nominee is announced this Saturday, our team will spring into action, giving the public an in-depth look into the nominee's background, and which senators need to be targeted to block them.
We're going to make sure voters know the stakes of this nomination, and the disastrous consequences for health care, reproductive freedom, voting rights, and more, if they take up a seat on the court.
We cannot allow the Supreme Court to be entrenched in right-wing minority rule.
Please donate today to help us get the truth out and mobilize the public.
Multiple polls have come out showing that majorities of voters oppose letting Trump replace Justice Ginsburg.
Just wait until they find out that the justice Trump wants will be the deciding vote to throw out the Affordable Care Act, repealing protections for preexisting conditions in the middle of a pandemic. Or that they will lock in enough votes to end Roe v. Wade and further gut voting rights.
One of the front runners as Trump’s pick has even supported the “separate but equal” doctrine that formed the legal basis of Jim Crow.
We only need four Republicans to stop an extreme right-wing nominee. Two GOP Senators—Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski—have come out against holding a confirmation vote at all so late in the president’s term. If Mark Kelly defeats Martha McSally in the special senate election in Arizona, he will be seated by the end of November, and we’ll only need one more Republican. Many are vulnerable in this crucial election year, and we need to be encouraging their constituents to leverage that.
Will it be easy? No. We are, without question, the underdogs in this fight. But ask yourself: What would RBG do?
Justice Ginsburg never shrank from a hard fight, not when she was one of only nine women at Harvard Law School and still made the Harvard Law Review. Not when she stood before an all-male Supreme Court to argue—successfully—for landmark women’s rights victories. And not when she was on the court, fighting for our rights, until the day cancer finally took her from us.
As soon as Trump’s nominee is announced this Saturday, our team will be poised to fight.
Justice Ginsburg fought for us until the day she died. Now we must fight for her. Please, if you can, make a donation today to help power our work.
Thanks for all you do for our democracy,
Robert Reich
