Our country is supposed to have a system of checks and balances to prevent any one person -- or any one party -- from abusing their power. But for at least the last decade, the Republican party has broken the rules of our democracy -- all for the sake of their own political gain.
In 2010, Republicans executed a plan called REDMAP -- a plot to take over state legislatures and redraw electoral maps to keep Democrats out of power, even if Democrats won more votes. Their scheme succeeded -- in 2012, for example, Democratic congressional candidates won 51% of the vote in Pennsylvania -- but only received about a quarter of the congressional seats. The GOP had successfully redrawn state districts so that no matter who won the election, Republicans got the power.
In 2016, Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court -- fulfilling his constitutional duty as president. But Republicans decided no matter what the Constitution says, they should have the power -- and invented a rule about not confirming justices in an election year. Now Republicans have immediately forgotten about their own rule and are set to confirm the Supreme Court’s 6th conservative justice -- putting the Affordable Care Act, the right to choose, the rights of LGBTQ+ citizens, and the future of American immigrants and their families in extreme jeopardy. But to Republicans, it doesn’t matter who’s in danger -- as long as the GOP gets to keep the power.
This election, we can take our power back. We can win back the Senate, protect the House, and save the White House. We can start a series of reforms to fix the mess that Republicans like Trump and McConnell have made of our country.
But the Republicans have already put their plans to steal the 2020 election into motion. They tapped an unqualified mega-donor to run the USPS into the ground at the same time they sowed doubt about mail-in ballots every chance they got. Now they’re rushing to lock down a 6-3 majority in the Supreme Court -- because they know Trump will contest the election based on his lies of voter fraud, and they want a high court of conservatives who will be happy to give Trump another four years in power.
We’re up against some of the most dastardly, morally bankrupt, scheming hypocrites the world has ever seen. They’ve had years to plan their takeover of this country. We must respond -- but we’ll need every single American to rise up against the power-hungry thieves who’ve stolen our democracy from us.
That’s why we’re reaching out to you.
