Dear Friend,

Overview (a 16-second scan):

• Big Money is blocking progress on drug price negotiations, common-sense gun reform, and climate change
• Wealthy donors, anonymous actors, and foreign companies currently have greater influence over our elections than you do
• Campaign finance reform is critical to making progress on your issues
• I'll share insight into Big Money's corrupting influence -- and ways you can take action -- in future Money in Politics emails and posts
• Do you want to drive corrupting money out of politics? Feel free to donate today [link removed]

Our system of representative democracy is broken.

If you grew up in the Schoolhouse Rock days like I did, you might remember I'm Just a Bill. Today, a reboot of that quaint video would likely depict dark figures in shadowy corners clutching fistfuls of cash. Times have changed, haven't they?

That's the unintended consequence of Citizens United coming to bear.

As you know, Citizens United split a Grand Canyon-sized chasm in the heart of America. A chasm with the interests of hard-working folks like you standing on one side -- and PACs, special interest groups, federal lobbyists, candidates, and elected officials on the other.

That's why I chose to run for Congress -- to fix what's broken, to give you a voice.

The influence of Big Money is apparent in every critical issue we face:

• Big Pharma lobbyists and their campaign cash successfully stalled drug price negotiations
• NRA campaign spending brought common-sense gun reform to a screeching halt
• Big Oil secured federal appointments and rolled back environmental protections intended to mitigate the worst climate change impacts

And, as this corrupting influence is a fat thumb on the scale that decides our elections, is it any wonder that these large contributions are accepted -- even outright sought?

These large donations buy powerful influence -- influence that dilutes your voice and distances you from your own government.

Now, our campaign finance system empowers anonymous funders and foreign companies to pour money into our political campaigns. It also keeps the revolving door from public office to highly paid lobbyist well-oiled.

It's flat-out wrong. Our government is meant to represent you, the people.

Whatever your number one issue is, please make campaign finance reform your number two -- because we won't see the change we need until your voices are the loudest, most powerful voices in the room.

And, that's why I'm going to help make it easier for you to reclaim your influence.

In the coming months, I'll pull back the curtain and help you see precisely how money is at the root of Washington's dysfunction. I'll also highlight the ways you can take action.

If this sounds like an important issue to you, I hope you'll consider making an investment today. [link removed]

Join me. Let's continue to repair our government together.

Sincerely,

Dean
