Voters — Including Republicans — Are More Likely to Support Candidates if They Back the Wealth Tax
At Data for Progress, we’ve polled literally thousands of policies, and we’ve identified a handful that are so overwhelmingly popular that a majority of Democrats, independents, and Republicans can get behind them. Such is the case for the wealth tax.

In brand new polling ([link removed]) , we asked Americans in 11 key states — ranging from battlegrounds like Iowa and Michigan to conservative states like Mississippi and Kansas — if they’d be more or less likely to vote for a Senate candidate that supported a wealth tax. In every state we tested, a clear majority of voters would prefer a candidate that backed a two percent wealth tax on those making over $50 million.

That includes a 61-25 majority of Texas voters, a 60-25 majority of Georgia voters, and even a 51-23 majority of Mississippi voters. Seriously.

But wait — wouldn’t Republicans be turned off by the wealth tax, denouncing it as a radical left-wing proposal? Our polling actually finds the opposite: the wealth tax has substantial cross-partisan appeal, with a plurality of Republicans reporting that they’d be more likely to vote for a Senate candidate if they backed the wealth tax.

If a plurality of Republican voters want a wealth tax, there’s no excuse for members of Congress to oppose it.

Data for Progress is showing Congress that funding big programs with a wealth tax is an electoral asset — not a liability. Help us continue to upend the conventional wisdom in Washington by chipping in to DFP right now! ([link removed])

A wealth tax is a win-win for progressives. Most obviously, it raises revenue, freeing up funding for programs like the Green New Deal. It would also radically reduce wealth inequality — all while providing a highly popular position to campaign on.

How’s that for an answer to the incessant “but how are you gonna pay for it?” takes.

Democrats don’t need to dance around criticisms that their plans are too costly. Our polling is showing legislators that taxing the wealthy can make programs more popular — not less. Pitch in to DFP now so we can continue this crucial work. ([link removed])
