Congressman Andy Levin
In conversation with ICT President Matteo Mecacci

Congressman Andy Levin, elected in 2018 to represent Michigan’s 9th District,
may be a new member of Congress, but he is not new to Tibet. He holds a BA in Religion
from Williams College and a master’s degree in Asian Languages and Cultures from the
University of Michigan. He studied at the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies
in Sarnath, India in 1981-82, where he first met His Holiness the Dalai Lama. He
traveled to Tibet (the regions of Kham and Amdo) in 1989 and soon after interviewed His
Holiness, resulting in newspaper and magazine articles when His Holiness won the Nobel
Peace Prize that year. His experiences in India, Tibet and China are one of the reasons
Levin sought a seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and its Asia subcommittee.
