Friend,
You’re invited to a special AU webinar: “No Politicking: Protecting the Johnson Amendment” next Tuesday, September 29th at 3 pm ET.
The Johnson Amendment, which has been in the U.S. tax code for more than 60 years, protects the integrity of tax-exempt organizations, including houses of worship, by ensuring they do not endorse or oppose political candidates. President Trump has repeatedly promised to “get rid of” the Johnson Amendment so he can entice a handful of politically motivated religious leaders to endorse him.
With the presidential election only six weeks away, it’s more important than ever that all of us, but especially communities of faith, understand what the Johnson Amendment means in practice today, how it protects both elections and houses of worship, and how houses of worship can respect the law and its intent.
“No Politicking: Protecting the Johnson Amendment” will answer all these questions and more. Featured presenters include AU’s VP of Public Policy, Maggie Garrett; Arkansas Sixth Circuit Judge and Pastor of New Millennium Church, the Rev. Wendell Griffen; Founder of Congregation Beth Adam in Ohio, Rabbi Robert Barr; and Co-founder and Executive Director of Hindu American Foundation, Suhag Shukla, as moderator.
Click here to RSVP for this webinar on Tuesday, September 29, at 3 pm ET. The Zoom link will be provided upon registration.
We need all religious leaders and communities to be a part of this important conversation. In the words of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” I hope you will join us. To read more about the Johnson Amendment, please click here.
Graciously,
