Tuesday's midterms delivered a hard message. Voters told Senate Republicans something is broken. The honest response is to stop, listen, and fix it.
Instead, the current leadership is preparing to do what it always does: hold a snap secret-ballot election for its leadership posts immediately after a national election — before anyone has done a real accounting of what went wrong, and before anyone else has a fair chance to make the case for a different course.
That is not leadership. It is an ambush. It is how the same team keeps the same jobs without having to campaign for them.
Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) is collecting signatures for a letter asking leadership to hold a conference meeting first — a postmortem on the midterms — before any leadership election. Electing leadership by acclamation, he said, is "unacceptable." He’s right.
Under conference rules, five GOP senators with a written request can force a special meeting. That bar is not high. The only question is whether enough senators will put accountability ahead of convenience.
Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) has said he will sign.
Given what happened this week, rushing into a leadership vote would be political malpractice. Senate Republicans should take a few weeks — not a few hours — to seriously evaluate the midterms. What did voters reject? Where did our conference fail working families on jobs, healthcare, housing, and costs at the kitchen table? What must change for us to earn back trust? You can’t answer those questions in a rush to crown leaders by acclamation.
Conservatives should demand a real pause, a serious look at the voters' message, and leadership elections only after that work is done — and only after we know who will actually be in the Senate next year.
Take Action
Here is what you can do today.
Call Senate Republicans. Use our call list with phone numbers [ [link removed] ] and urge them to wait on electing leaders until the conference has done a full review of the midterm elections. Be polite. Tell them a snap vote after a loss is not leadership. Tell them Ron Johnson is right to call for a real delay. Tell them voters are watching whether Senate Republicans listen before they elect the people who will lead the conference for the next two years.
Thank you for being part of our team and for working so hard to fight for America’s future.
