Dear John,Last night, the Lords defeated the government on food standardsThey agreed with us and voted to keep British food standards high - the pressure is on the government to do the right thingWe sent over 40,000 emails to MPs this week. We're still waiting to see how many Conservative MPs will rebel against the international law-breaking bill when it gets to the final stage in the House of Commons. That’s thanks to grassroots pressure from people like you. We know Conservative backbenchers are not happy with this government. And just around the corner is another chance to break down their defences. The Agricultural Bill will be voted on next week. This will decide our food, environmental and agricultural standards for years to come. Currently, the Agriculture Bill gives no protections to British food or British farms – protections we were promised. Backbench MPs, especially from rural constituencies, are facing massive pressure to resist this Bill. And we’ve heard there is another, even bigger rebellion brewing. Send a message to your MP and tell them to support food standards. The Internal Markets Bill, as well as breaking international law and paving the way for no deal, would force the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to accept whatever subpar food imports Westminster allows. Whatever happens with the Internal Markets Bill, we can still stop cheap, substandard food like chlorinated chicken flooding the UK market and being undemocratically forced on the nations of the UK. We can build on the momentum we’ve already seen: the massive campaigns actions, the discontent in the Conservative rank and file. If we harness this moment, we can start landing some real blows on the government. Send a message to your MP now, and tell them to stand up for British standards. Send a message today. These last few weeks have shown me there is still hope for this country. There are still plenty of people who care about democracy, internationalism and the law. There are plenty of people willing to stand up and speak out for what’s right. Best wishes, Cary Mitchell, |
