Intellectual Takeout and Charlemagne Institute are proud to announce Backchannel: a free, live videocast presentation and discussion. We invite our readers and supporters to watch these weekly presentations from one of our thinkers on a designated topic, and submit their questions for the subsequent Q&A session. It’s a continuing opportunity to join an interactive forum – to hear from some of our country’s brightest minds, ask questions, and gain their behind-the-scenes insights and wisdom.
This week's episode:
Reparations: Blueprint for a Shakedown
with Carl F. Horowitz
Chronicles contributor
Please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. CDT for this week’s Backchannel videocast featuring Carl F. Horowitz, Chronicles contributor, whose most recent article "Reparations: Blueprint for a Shakedown" is featured in the September 2020 issue of the magazine.
While the idea of payments of reparations to the descendants of enslaved African-Americans is not new, it has certainly gained traction in recent years amidst the rise of a more radical social justice movement. While such reparations once seemed a pipe dream, discussions around the idea are now being taken more seriously in academic and political circles. Carl F. Horowitz addresses these developments and their implications in his recent article.
Horowitz writes in Chronicles:
"Since our laws allegedly enshrine so-called systemic racism, it follows that the system must be reconfigured to satisfy black grievances—whatever the cost. This advocacy has been realized all too well through affirmative action quotas, welfare state expansion, and spurious anti-discrimination lawsuits. Reparations would take things to their logical conclusion."
Carl F. Horowitz is project manager of National Legal and Policy Center, a nonprofit group based in Falls Church, Virginia, dedicated to promoting ethics in public life. He has a PhD in urban planning and policy development.
