Dear Friend, Senator Mitt Romney just announced that he will go along with a Senate confirmation vote on Donald Trump's nominee to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg.1 Trump is announcing his nominee on Saturday, and now he has the votes he needs to confirm that person just days before the presidential election. But this isn't over. We still have a chance to prevent McConnell from pushing this nomination through. Congressional Democrats' best hope of resisting Trump’s plan to install a third Justice on the Court is by using procedural rules to grind the Senate to a halt. But we need to be sure they have the grassroots support to get it done, which is why Demand Progress is driving hundreds of thousands of calls and emails to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi asking them to use every tool they have to stop this vote. Will you donate to help fight Trump's effort to steal another Supreme Court seat? If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: Republicans were always going to try and push this nomination through, even if it meant contradicting everything they said in 2016.2 The outright hypocrisy being displayed by McConnell and his colleagues—who parroted McConnell’s reasoning to block President Obama’s nominee and have now turned 180 degrees—is an affront to all of their constituents and degrading to our democracy. Right now, we have a Court that is 4-3 against Roe v. Wade and the Affordable Care Act. If Trump is allowed to push through his nominee, it will be an extreme right-wing lock on the Court that will undermine progressive policies and human rights, even if Trump doesn't get a second term. Senate Democrats need to spring into action now. The Senate runs on unanimous consent. There are ten Democrats on the Judiciary committee who can block every motion, force every bill to be read in full, and use other parliamentary tactics to try to shut down the Senate until January. The House can consider impeachment and other tactics to tie up the Senate as well. This is our best chance to try and stop Trump and McConnell—but we need to make sure Senate Democrats know that the American people expect them to resist a right-wing lock on the Supreme Court. We're ramping up our grassroots mobilization, but time is quickly running out. Will you donate to help save the Supreme Court? Thanks for standing with us. Robert Cruickshank, Sources: 1.
