John,
Mass hysterectomies are being systematically performed by a US government facility.
Demand Congress put an end to these crimes against women in ICE detention centers.
At the Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia, a doctor referred to as the “uterus collector” removes immigrant women’s uteruses and fallopian tubes. These medically unnecessary procedures are happening without interpreters. Women are waking up from procedures with no understanding of what happened to them or why it happened. 1
The DHS Inspector General is investigating but that’s not enough.
The heads of the Detention Center, the medical director, and doctors accused of performing procedures need to be suspended without pay pending the results of the DHS’s investigation. And every woman at the detention center should be examined by a Spanish speaking medical professional and provided with legal representation.
Tell Congress: protect these women and stop the crimes taking place in ICE detention centers.
TAKE ACTION
We've spoken out about ICE’s use of surveillance technology to target and terrorize immigrants. This is another abuse of power that we can't stay silent about.
Forced hysterectomies -- along with genocide, torture, and mass rapes-- is a crime against humanity. The people directly involved with these crimes and running this institution must be removed from positions of power. 2
This institution has already subjected women to mass hysterectomies, imagine what other abuses and intimidatory tactics they would employ to cover up their crimes.
America has a long history of the forced sterilization of women - Black, Latino, Indigenous, prison inmates, and those in mental health institutions have all been victims of systematic mass hysterectomies. We have learned that government institutions with little oversight, little accountability, and no checks and balances create the conditions for these types of unconscionable acts. 3
Congress must step in to put an immediate end to the criminal abuse these women are facing.
Sign the petition to stop this from happening to any other women.
Thank you for standing up for women,
Ayele Hunt, Fight for the Future
