There's a reason why journalism is the only profession explicitly protected by the U.S. Constitution. We're supposed to be the check and balance on power. That's an awesome responsibility—and why it's essential for us to maintain our editorial independence.

We don't rely on corporate advertising or underwriting, or government support to produce our daily news hour. Democracy Now! is funded by you, our global audience.

If you start a new monthly donation today, your gift will go three times as far to help us produce our daily, independent news hour. ([link removed])

Democracy Now! gives people a platform to speak for themselves, amplifying their voices for the world to hear.

This morning we spoke to whistleblower Dawn Wooten, a nurse at a for-profit ICE jail in Georgia, who filed an explosive complaint alleging that female prisoners have been forcibly sterilized by a local doctor, who they call the "uterus collector," and that the jail has failed to protect both prisoners and employees from COVID-19.

"As women, we are supposed to remain silent, according to the world, and we're not supposed to have a voice. So, in speaking out, I am concerned for the women in detention and for how they're going to be treated," said Wooten of her decision to file a complaint.

Democracy Now! offers unique perspectives on breaking news events, including the death of legendary Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away on Friday at the age of 87.

Justice Ginsburg's death sets up a major political battle over her replacement, with President Trump vowing to nominate an anti-choice conservative judge to fill her seat by Saturday, just five weeks before the election. In 2016, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to hold confirmation hearings for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland, saying nine months before an election was too little time.

Yesterday Democracy Now! looked at the life and legacy of Justice Ginsburg, speaking to one of her favorite "clients," Stephen Wiesenfeld.

After his wife died in childbirth in 1972, Wiesenfeld was told he was ineligible to receive Social Security benefits for sole surviving parents. Ruth Bader Ginsburg, then a lawyer, represented Wiesenfeld before the Supreme Court and argued that denying Social Security benefits to fathers because of their sex was unconstitutional, winning a unanimous 8-0 decision in the case.

"Before Ruth Bader Ginsburg came along, the stereotypes are that males, they work, they pay money into their systems ... Women stay home, they raise children ... in just a six-year period, [Ginsburg] took the Warren Burger very conservative court and taught them that the stereotypes, when they hurt one gender, hurt the other gender," Wiesenfeld said.

Democracy Now! covers the movements changing America and the world, lifting up the voices of ordinary heroes who do extraordinary things to make the world a better place—including the medical health professionals who have been working tirelessly to protect people from the health risks of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week Democracy Now! spoke with infectious disease expert Dr. Monica Gandhi about President Trump's refusal to wear a mask and mocking those who do.

"Masks are a pillar of pandemic control. They’re incredibly important. And there is no country in the world right now that has been fighting masks like this, especially at the presidential level. And if we could have started mask wearing, consistent mask wearing, at the beginning, we would have averted deaths," said Dr. Gandhi.
