We are all feeling the impacts of climate change, from wildfires in the West to hurricanes on the Gulf Coast to flooding in the Midwest.
This moment demands urgent action. Yet House Democrats just introduced a new bill, the misnamed Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act, that falls drastically short. It’s a hodgepodge of false solutions and weak half-measures that will only make climate chaos worse for all of us.
This proposed bill would unleash new sources of methane (a powerful greenhouse gas) from our ocean floors, promote nuclear power as a ‘climate solution’ and increase oil production. Furthermore, it tries to greenwash half-baked carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technology, the latest fake climate solution peddled by fossil fuel corporations.
The real surprise here is that Trump and his cronies didn’t write this bill themselves.
The schemes in this bill are on every fossil fuel billionaire’s wish list. They’re about corporate profit, not protecting people or stopping climate chaos. But Food & Water Action is fighting back – with your help.
Corporate polluters want us to believe that CCS is the best ‘new’ way to combat the climate crisis. Big Oil & Gas has been pushing CCS as a climate solution for years because it means business-as-usual for them. They get to continue wreaking havoc on our lands and water, and polluting our air, all the while misleading us into thinking they are “capturing” the greenhouse gases being released.
The real secret? CCS technology doesn’t even work! For example, a billion-dollar CCS project in Texas was recently shut down because it failed miserably.
Big Oil & Gas got us into this climate crisis by suppressing science and funding climate change denial. We won’t be fooled any more of their fake solutions! We need to make sure our lawmakers aren’t fooled either.
