SEPTEMBER 6, 2019: With all the focus on the 2020 presidential election, it’s easy to forget that a few states have significant elections scheduled for this November as well. A total of 538 state legislative seats ([link removed]) have regularly scheduled elections this year in Louisiana, Mississippi, Virginia, and New Jersey.
Many of the races won’t be all that competitive. In fact, 158 Republicans will be running without a Democratic opponent, and 141 Democrats won’t face a Republican challenger.
As a result, just 239 of this year’s races (44.4%) will feature a candidate from both major parties.
