Generational pain created by drug war
Dear Friend,
If you didn’t get a chance to read what I sent about the mass criminalization brought on by an unjust drug war, here’s a summary: Policing and enforcement of the drug war has always been racially targeted, with a particularly cruel impact on generations of Black, Latinx, and Indigenous people.
People of color are more likely to be stopped, searched, arrested, convicted, harshly sentenced, and burdened with a lifelong criminal record. This is particularly true for drug law violations.
And in the era of Covid-19, incarceration is also a dangerous vulnerability for people in jails and prisons and in the surrounding community. You can help end the drug war that causes so much pain. We need your support today to advocate for drug policy reform and end the war on drugs. Can I count on you?

Punishment for a drug law violation is not only meted out by the criminal justice system, it is now exacerbated by Covid-19 while incarcerated. The drug war produces lifelong collateral consequences as people with a drug law violation history suffer lasting punishment as they face barriers to jobs, housing, and, crucially in this election year, even the right to vote.
The drug war tears apart lives, families, and communities. As we fight to end systemic racism it’s clear that ending the drug war is a critical piece of the puzzle.
We cannot keep up the fight without you. We need you to stand with us as we fight to:
• Advance marijuana legalization including working with cosponsors to get the MORE Act passed in Congress to deschedule marijuana federally.
• Decriminalize all drugs and prioritize the health and safety of people who use drugs over punishment.
• Decarcerate our jails and prisons and end our systems of mass incarceration.
• End over-policing and our culture of mass criminalization, especially in Black, Latinx and Indigenous communities ruthlessly targeted by the drug war.
• Dignify the lives of people who use drugs and everyone touched by the drug war.
