CBS 2 Some Protests Against Police Brutality Take A More Confrontational Approach Terrance Moses was watching protesters against police brutality march down his quiet residential street one recent evening when some in the group of a few hundred suddenly stopped and started yelling. Mr. Moses was initially not sure what the protesters were upset about, but as he got closer, he saw it: His neighbors had an American flag on display. “It went from a peaceful march, calling out the names, to all of a sudden, bang, ‘How dare you fly the American flag?’” said Mr. Moses, who is Black and runs a nonprofit group in the Portland, Ore., area. “They said take it down. They wouldn’t leave. They said they’re going to come back and burn the house down.” Mr. Moses and others blocked the demonstrators and told them to leave. “We don’t go around terrorizing folks to try and force them to do something they don’t want to do,” said Mr. Moses, whose nonprofit group provides support for local homeless people. “I’m a veteran. I’m for these liberties.” New York Times Alleged Thief With Hatchet Attacks Texas Cop An El Paso man was arrested after allegedly attacking a police officer with a hatchet following a liquor store theft Wednesday evening in the Five Points neighborhood. Mark Hauser, who was once head of the board at the high school the famous couple’s daughters attended, and is also a private equity and insurance executive in the Cincinnati area, became the 29th parent to plead guilty to participating in the scandal involving top universities across the country. Los Angeles Times Fires Continue To Take A Toll On California Air Quality Swirling smoke from California’s historic firestorm is still clogging some of the state’s skies — leading to unhealthy air quality in and around the Sierra Nevada. Conditions at one point were considered hazardous Monday morning in the area of Mammoth Lakes, meaning “everyone should stay indoors and reduce activity levels,” according to air quality monitors. However, the air later cleared to a point where it was only “very unhealthy,” with residents urged to avoid strenuous outdoor activities. That part of California has been subjected to particularly foul air quality. Some areas around Bishop and Mammoth Lakes were listed as “beyond index” last week — with air quality measurements that reached 626, far beyond the 0-500 scale. Mammoth Lakes’ air quality measured at 317 just before 8 a.m. Monday and had improved to 248 by about 9 a.m. Los Angeles Times California’s COVID-19 Positivity Rate Dips Below 3% For The First Time But Officials Urge Continued Caution The share of Californians who tested positive for COVID-19 in the last week dipped below 3% for the first time, a sign that the Golden State is finally starting to beat back the spread of the coronavirus, officials said Monday. Just 3.1% of Californians who were tested over the last two weeks received a positive result, and that ratio dropped to 2.8% in the last seven days, state officials said. Hospitals in California are treating the fewest patients with the virus since April, and admissions to the state’s intensive care units have been dropping steadily, too. It’s a rare piece of good news for 40 million Californians, who are contending with raging wildfires and toxic air quality on top of the economic, physical and emotional effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
