Dear John,
Demand food service companies make a commitment to not sell GMO salmon!
|
All communities deserve and need a food system that is healthy, safe and protects our environment. But right now, our food system and wild salmon face a new threat -- GMO salmon, the first genetically engineered animal allowed to be sold for food, could end up on our plates as soon as this fall. Take action to stop GMO salmon from being sold to food service companies.
Thanks to pressure from Friends of the Earth members like you, more than 80 food retailers, including Kroger, Walmart, Costco, Albertson’s, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods, along with restaurants like Red Lobster and Legal Seafood, made commitments to not sell GMO salmon. But it could still sneak onto the market.
The GMO salmon company, AquaBounty, could sell its product to restaurants and food service giants that serve millions of meals, like Aramark and Compass Group. We all have a right to know what we are eating, but GMO salmon sold in restaurants or cafeterias won’t have to be labeled.
Tell food service companies and restaurants to keep unlabeled GMO salmon off our plates!
GMO salmon may pose serious environmental risks, including potentially irreversible damage to wild salmon populations. They threaten fishing communities, coastal Indigenous communities and our health. But the FDA has ignored these threats and is allowing this risky GMO animal onto the market.
AquaBounty says it will sell GMO salmon this fall -- and so far, only a few restaurants and one of the Big 3 food service companies, Sodexo, have said they won’t sell GMO salmon.
Demand food service companies and restaurants buy sustainable seafood and say no to GMO salmon!
The GMO salmon is just the tip of the iceberg and could set a dangerous precedent for the biotech industry to release other GMO animals onto the market, including pigs, cows, and chickens. They are being engineered to better fit within a factory farming system that benefits Big Ag corporations over fishers, farmers, eaters, and the environment.
The FDA is allowing AquaBounty to push its risky GMO salmon onto the market -- threatening wild salmon, our health and fishing community livelihoods. That means it’s up to us to push restaurants and food service companies to join grocery stores in refusing to sell GMO salmon. But we must act now!
Together, we can make sure restaurants and food service companies, like Aramark and Compass Group, supply truly sustainable seafood and not GMO salmon. We will protect our food system from Big Ag -- but we need you John!
Take action: Tell food service companies and restaurants to protect wild salmon, fishing communities and our health and make a commitment to not sell GMO salmon!
Standing with you,
