Earlier this month, a soon-to-be member of Congress threatened violence against Rashida and the Squad, posting a photo holding an assault rifle next to their faces. The post incited violence, calling on “strong conservative Christians” to “go on the offense” and “take our country back.”

Following the post, death threats against Rashida and other Squad members rose.

But rather than condemn hate or violence against their colleagues, Republican Congressmembers chose to welcome the right-wing conspiracy theorist to the party.

And just last week, Rashida’s Republican opponent in November’s general election decided to join the fray, announcing that he’s raffling off an AR-15 rifle as part of his campaign.

Clearly, the GOP is embracing violent threats against women of color in office. These threats encourage rising political violence and put all our lives in danger. We’ve got to take a stand.

These aren’t just fringe attacks.

Rashida’s right-wing opponent is a local chair for the Michigan Republican Party. And the Georgia Congressmember to-be who incited violence online? Trump called her a “rising Republican star” and top House Republican leaders have backed her candidacy—even after she called Rashida and Ilhan’s 2018 Congressional wins “an Islamic invasion of our government.”

This kind of bigoted hate and violence is baked into the Republican Party.

For years, Trump and other GOP leaders have incited dangerous attacks on Rashida and the Squad. Trump told them to “go back” to where they came from (which is Detroit, in Rashida’s case).

And in the lead-up to November’s election, Trump and Republicans in Congress have been openly encouraging fascist violence against protestors defending Black lives. It’s already led to multiple murders.

Republicans want to tear our country apart, dividing us and making us afraid of one another. They want to start a civil war just so they can hold onto their power, because we threaten the unjust status quo.

We have to clearly call out these threats to our lives. Right-wing hate is the real danger our communities face—not each other. In fact, we can only protect ourselves and one another if we come together. When we show up for one another, we are stronger than hate.
