What to Know: Most Americans believe that “blue lives” do matter, and want to protect the police officers who are protecting us.

The TPPF Take: Erasing the “thin blue line” by defunding (and not defending) the police will make all of us less safe.

“No reasonable person was discussing ‘defunding’ or ‘reimagining’ law enforcement six months ago, but now some of our most progressive cities are actually doing it,” says TPPF’s Randy Petersen. “The Virginia Senate passed a bill that essentially places a target on officers' backs. I hope these elected officials realize that even the most progressive among them will find no quarter in an anarchist takeover.”

The Constitution Matters

What to Know: America celebrated Constitution Day last week, with many reminders that our foundational document is still vitally important.

The TPPF Take: TPPF attorneys spent Constitution Day filing a brief on behalf of the Berrymans, a Texas family whose rights have been trampled by Child Protective Services.

“It’s fitting that our brief was filed on the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution,” says TPPF’s Andrew Brown. “CPS often uses vague statutes as a way to get around basic Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. The Constitution was written to secure the blessings of liberty to the people. Our brief reminds CPS that it applies to them.”

A New Tool

What to Know: TPPF has launched the Ginn Economic Brief, an informative new overview of the Texas and national economies.

The TPPF Take: “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics recently released the U.S. jobs report for August 2020,” says TPPF’s Vance Ginn. “The labor market has been improving but families continue to struggle compared with the robust situation at the peak in February 2020, which was before the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns of society by state and local governments.”
