We know we’ve been throwing a lot of fake voting holidays at you—National Vote By Mail Day, National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, Get Your Shit Together Day.
But all of those fake voting holidays owe a debt to the original fake voting holiday, National Voter Registration Day. NVRD was first observed in 2012, and since then, nearly 3 million voters have registered to vote on the holiday to date, including 1.3 million in 2018-2019 alone.
NVRD has been so successful, in fact, that we weren’t entirely sure whether to go all in this year to celebrate it. This Vote Save America community has been together for two years (!) and we’re pretty sure you’re all registered at this point (RIGHT?).
Back in 2018, our whole thing was “pledgister.” But it’s 2020. This year, you’re spending your weekends talking to voters in battleground states. You’re signing up to be a poll worker on Election Day. You’re helping fund everything from grassroots voter outreach to large scale voter protection programs. So we’re not letting you off the hook with a simple “✌️ Vote 🙂 🇺🇸” email. Not this year. On National Voter Registration Day 2020, we’re asking you to do four things:
- Verify that you’re registered to vote at your current address. Especially if you’ve moved since the last election, if you’ve changed your name, or if you haven’t voted in awhile. Especially this year, with so many people moving because of the pandemic, making sure you’re registered at the address where you plan to vote is more important than ever.
- Once you’ve checked your registration, make sure that your friends and family check theirs as well (or register for the first time, wouldn’t that be exciting!)
- If you don’t have any unregistered voters in your life, we’ve got some for you! It’s not too late to join our friends at Next Gen Action to help register young voters in 11 battleground states today.
- If you’re short on time but have a few bucks to spare, chip in to our Every Last Vote Fund, where we’re partnering with Register2Vote, a nonpartisan civic engagement and technology organization that will send unregistered Americans in our battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin all the materials they need to get registered to vote before upcoming registration deadlines. For every $2 raised, R2V will be able to reach one new voter by first class expedited mail.
