Here’s what you can do to help save SCOTUS.

Indivisibles,

Like many of you, we’re still mourning the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The truth is that we’ll continue to miss her for quite some time because she was a truly phenomenal woman. Her life’s work changed our country’s trajectory and gave our movement ground to stand on. Her legacy lives on within us -- all of us -- and that’s why first thing Saturday morning, you all were asking us, “what can we do right now to protect her legacy?” Far too much is at stake, not just in the next 43 days, but beyond.

The power of the Court isn’t always talked about, but it constantly redefines our country and our daily lives. Unlike the President and Congress, Supreme Court Justices aren’t subject to term limits -- meaning they will preside and exercise judgment over hundreds of cases over the course of their lives. Justice Ginsburg’s impact as a champion for issues we care about -- like preventing discrimination on the basis of sex, ensuring just treatment for people with disabilities, and the legalization of same-sex marriage -- will be felt for generations.

If Trump’s nominee is confirmed, the pains of the Trump era will be felt for as long as his picks are on the bench -- but the impact might actually be felt more immediately. Back in 2016, Trump’s first order of business was repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and he’s been in court over it ever since. When Trump’s pick inevitably backs repealing the ACA, Trump and the GOP will rush to eliminate the health care of millions of Americans in the middle of a pandemic that has already killed almost 200,000 people. All the while, the COVID-19 relief package that the House passed back in May is still sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk in the Senate.

With so much on the line, our fight for SCOTUS has only emphasized our broader goals to win the White House, flip the Senate, and keep the House. It’s a tough fight, but it’s a fight that we know we can win. Let’s jump straight into your weekly to-dos:

 Your weekly to-dos

  1. Call your Senators and demand that they refuse to confirm any new Supreme Court Justices until we have a new president. This is crucial. A few GOP senators have agreed to hold off on filling the vacancy, but not enough to block it completely. Trump and Mitch McConnell didn’t miss a beat when they said they would rush to confirm a conservative justice -- we have no time to waste. We need to call every day until we win.
  2. Tweet at your Senators. Visibility of our asks is important, not just for our elected officials, but for your friends and followers. They can’t ignore our calls for action if we flood their timelines.
  3. Email your Senators. No Twitter? No problem. Let’s fill their inboxes with our demands -- we already have an email pre-written for you to send.
  4. Watch and share this video about why we shouldn’t fill the SCOTUS seat so close to the election. Narrated by Mitch McConnell himself.
  5. Sign up to phonebank with Windivisible. With our sights set on Election Day, we need to let voters know what’s at stake in our fight for the Supreme Court.
  6. Sign up for our emergency National Activist Call when Trump announces his SCOTUS nominee pick. Trump is expected to announce his SCOTUS nominee this week. We’re ready to fight back, so join this call for the latest ways to take action given the latest news.

Defend RBG’s legacy on the Supreme Court

Way back in January (a decade ago?) you helped us launch the Payback Project to hold Trump’s worst Senate enablers accountable. Today, with a Supreme Court seat open and Senate Republicans threatening to break their own precedent to fill it just weeks before an election, we have to act fast to make sure we beat them decisively on November 3rd.

We have a million-dollar-plus plan to take back the Senate, which is our BEST shot at ensuring a liberal court, but it’s powered by small dollar donations. Rush an $18 donation to the Payback Project right now in honor of RBG to ensure we can fund it and all our work to ensure a fairer, more equitable future she would be proud of.

May Her Memory Be a Revolution

Over the weekend, Leah Greenberg (Indivisible’s Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director) spoke at a vigil in front of the Supreme Court and left us with this message:

“When an icon passes, we mourn her and we mourn with her family...But we also recognize that her legacy is only the beginning, it is going to echo for generations to come because we are going to fight for it.”

Like us, many of you are still in mourning over this loss. In the face of all this hypocrisy and politics, it’s important to keep in mind that, while we may have lost Justice Ginsburg, we will never lose what she represents. The fight is only getting started, and we’re channeling RBG’s spirit to just keep going -- especially when it gets hard. We hope this video serves as some motivation to carry on her legacy. We’ll be here with you every step of the way.

In solidarity,
Indivisible Team
