Hello,
Last Friday, America lost a feminist icon and a champion for equal justice whose work spans over half a century: Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
I join the rest of our country in mourning the loss of one of America's greatest public servants. Justice Ginsburg did so much for our country. She left our nation better than she received it.
Her last words to us were: "My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed." After decades of service to our nation, the Senate must honor her final wish.
This is urgent — Trump, Mitch McConnell, and their allies in the Senate are attempting to jam through a nominee. Sign our petition today demanding Senate Republicans honor Justice Ginsburg's final wishes and hold off on nominating a new Justice until after the election.
No matter what lies Trump tries to feed the media and American people, asking the Senate to hold on replacing Justice Ginsburg is common practice. In fact, when President Obama was in office, Republicans held a Supreme Court seat open in 2016 for 11 MONTHS before a new nomination — and another three months after that for confirmation.
Philadelphia and Pennsylvania's very own Senator Pat Toomey called on the Senate to wait for eight months before selecting a new Justice in 2016. Now, Senator Mitch McConnell, Toomey, and Trump can — and must — follow through on their own words and wait until after the will of the people have spoken on Election Day. It's the least they can do to honor Justice Ginsburg's legacy.
To all Republican senators who waited 11 months to fill a SCOTUS seat in 2016, I urge you to respect both democracy and Justice Ginsburg's final wish. If you agree, John, please add your name next to mine today.
Thank you,
Dwight Evans
