On Friday we lost a trailblazer and hero in the battle for justice. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a litigator, jurist, and an icon. She made the world a better place, and her passing is a tremendous loss for our nation.

Justice Ginsburg fought her whole life for equality and fairness.

As a lawyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg fiercely led the legal battle for women's equality. Her work helped bar gender discrimination in military compensation and in state benefits. Her efforts made it possible for women to gain financial independence, allowing -- for the first time -- women to withdraw money without their husband's permission.

As a judge and Supreme Court Justice, she stood for voting rights, workers' rights, women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and so much more. Her powerful dissents gave a voice to those without one. Justice Ginsburg fully embodied the phrase "Equal Justice Under Law," and worked hard to make it a reality.

It is difficult to overstate the impact Justice Ginsburg had on our country. Her principles, vision, and courage brought us closer to that more perfect union.

My heart is heavy and my thoughts are with her family and loved ones. Along with the rest of the nation, I mourn the loss of the remarkable Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
