Dear John,
TONIGHT, join us for the U.S. premiere of the film We Are Many, about the global movement against the Iraq War [[link removed]] !
It couldn't come at a better time.
In recent months we've seen massive protests against racism and police violence, across the United States, joined by solidarity actions around the world. We have seen chants of "Black Lives Matter!" and "Defund the Police" erupt in the streets from Minneapolis to New York and from Nairobi to Tokyo, Bangkok, Bethlehem, and beyond.
It's the latest in a proud tradition of global protests.
The biggest one-day protest so far, in the run-up to war in Iraq almost two decades ago, showed us all how demonstrations can help build international movements whose impacts reverberate long after the streets have emptied. On February 15, 2003, the cry was "the world says NO to war," echoing in the streets of more than 800 cities from the South Pacific across Eurasia, down through Africa and across to North and South America.
That singular day set in motion actions that helped pave the way for the overthrow of a dictator in Egypt, for U.S. presidents deciding not to go to war against Iran and Syria, and showed movements across the globe just what a truly international movement could look like.
We were in the middle of that organizing. And Amir Amirani's terrific new film, We Are Many [[link removed]] , brings to life not only the excitement and fear of that day, but the historic events that followed.
The film is opening tonight in the U.S. and Canada — and National Priorities Project is proud to partner with our other projects at the Institute for Policy Studies to be a Virtual Host of the premiere tonight, with a unique live-streamed event marking the International Day of Peace. " We Are Many [[link removed]] " is a powerful tribute to movement building. As peaceful protests against racism continue to rise across the world, the message of "We Are Many" resonates more deeply than ever.
It features a stellar cast including IPS Board members Danny Glover & Harry Belafonte as well as Noam Chomsky, Jeremy Corbyn, Colleen Kelly, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Medea Benjamin, and our very own Phyllis Bennis and IPS Associate Fellow Bill Fletcher — plus many more!
