Our nation, as well as the rest of the world, have experienced unprecedented heat, extreme drought, detrimental storms, wildfires and more. Experts agree that we cannot waste any time in taking action to reduce our carbon emissions if we want to avoid the most detrimental climate chaos that is yet to come.
Today is Zero Emissions Day, and it is high time that we stop talking about zero emissions as a distant goal and start talking about it as a necessary change that we need to start implementing now.
I am proud to say that I have always been a fierce advocate for environmental protections. In 2004, I earned a perfect score on the League of Conservation Voters’ National Environmental Scorecard, and I have kept that reputation while working on the Safe Climate Caucus, continuing to vote in favor of investing in clean energy, protecting our public lands, and as an original co-sponsor of the Green New Deal (and a sponsor of the Green New Deal for Public Housing). And this year, I was so proud that my record merited being named the “best progressive to vote for” in NY-12 by the Sunrise Movement’s NYC hub.
We urgently need to come together to undo Trump’s rollbacks on environmental protections. Joe Biden has a plan to do that, which includes developing a carbon pollution-free power sector, promoting sustainable agriculture, modernizing our infrastructure and so much more.
Unfortunately, we can’t afford to wait until November to make these changes. We need climate action NOW if we want to curb the most detrimental impacts of climate change.
