News and Rapid Response
GLAAD condemns dangerous anti-trans digital ad campaign and works to get harmful videos removed from Facebook
On September 3, GLAAD condemned an announced $4 million digital ad campaign, which is aimed at swing state voters in Michigan and is dangerously inaccurate and anti-trans. GLAAD is asking sites and social media platforms to reject posting the ads. After the ads began running on Facebook, GLAAD, along with other organizations, reached out. Select ads were removed shortly after and others went inactive. The ads were produced by the so-called American Principles Project (APP), which has attempted similar transphobic messaging in North Carolina and Kentucky. Both campaigns failed to achieve APP’s goal of electing its preferred candidates. APP’s release announcing its ad campaign in Michigan has wildly inaccurate claims about inclusive policies for trans athletes, and extreme claims that ignore research about how affirming a young person’s gender identity saves their lives. The release further strains credibility with claims that APP’s opposition candidates push “sterilization,” which is completely untrue. In response, GLAAD released a statement from GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis, which reads: “In America, equality is for everyone. These ads perpetuate dangerous stereotypes, traffic in misinformation, and put the lives of transgender people at risk. Sites and social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook should decline to run them and send a message loud and clear that those who would use their platforms to peddle hate and lies will not be tolerated or validated.”
Transgender Media Representation
Star Trek: Discovery works with the GLAAD Media Institute to introduce the franchise’s first non-binary and transgender characters
After consulting for over a year with the show and CBS publicity, Nick Adams, GLAAD's Director of Transgender Representation, helped announce that Star Trek: Discovery is adding the first non-binary and transgender characters in the history of the franchise. The CBS press release included a link to a GLAAD interview with Blu del Barrio, the non-binary actor making their debut in the show. This was del Barrio's first interview about their gender and landing their first professional acting gig. The trans character will be played by out trans actor and GLAAD 20 Under 20 Ian Alexander. The series showrunner, Michelle Paradise, said in the press release: "We take pride in working closely with Blu del Barrio, Ian Alexander and Nick Adams at GLAAD to create the extraordinary characters of Adira and Gray, and bring their stories to life with empathy, understanding, empowerment, and joy." Adams also did an interview with CTV News in Canada to discuss the importance of trans and non-binary representation in the 54-year-old franchise. Season three of Star Trek: Discovery premieres October 15.
