Would you make a three-hour journey by foot if it meant you could feed your family during a time of crisis? For 400 families in Honduras who recently received emergency food assistance supported by Hunger Champions like you, the journey, while difficult, was well worth it. These families earn incomes by selling crops or other products in local markets in their rural villages. Sadly, their livelihoods have come to a halt while markets in Honduras remained shuttered due to COVID-19. Our operations were disrupted, too, when our meal packaging and distribution efforts paused this spring. We recognized that hunger would not pause for us to find an alternative solution. We worked quickly to supply in-country partners across the globe with short-term grant funding for purchasing and distributing food locally. Some families, like those we described in Honduras, will receive baskets filled with nutritious food items that meet immediate needs AND support local economies. Our efforts to provide these food baskets are ongoing as the number of people facing hunger globally continues to rise during the pandemic.
