OCA Remembers and Honors Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Washington, DC - OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates mourns the loss of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The Brooklyn native became the the second woman to be appointed to the nation’s highest court in 1993 and brought a long legal career rooted in the fight for gender equality--spanning positions in academica, the ACLU, and the U.S. District Court of Appeals. During her time as an associate justice, Ginsburg continued to be a trailblazer and a role model for women. Known for her powerful dissents, she became a cultural and pop icon, earning the nickname of “The Notorious R.B.G.” As the timeline for the upcoming General Election shortens, various elected officials have expressed vastly different intents on filling her vacancy in the court.  Nonetheless, we mourn the loss of Justice Ginsburg.

“We are incredibly sad to hear the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg” says Thu Nguyen, OCA National Director. “Her life is an inspiration to us all, and her legacy speaks volumes about our nation’s highest court-- that legal discourse is essential for our democracy to function. It was because of Justice Ginsburg that many women are able to pursue their legal, political, and professional careers with confidence. Her grit, passion, and fierce determination serve as an example for aspiring young people everywhere.”

“Justice Ginsburg paved the way for legal decisions that impact our lives today,” says Roland Hwang, OCA National Vice President of Public Affairs. “From her opinions in landmark cases like United States v. Virginia regarding equitable university administration policies, Olmstead v. L.C. concerning the rights of persons with disabilities, Obergefell v. Hodges as major progress for the LGBTQ community, and Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt with women’s health policy, Justice Ginsburg worked within the framework of the law to continue laying the foundations of an equitable society for the future. OCA will continue to honor her legacy through our work, starting with the call to fulfill Justice Ginsburg’s wish, to allow the people to vote in order to choose the president who will select her replacement.”
