Pete made us proud last night during CNN’s climate crisis town hall. He offered up bold solutions to confront this emergency -- but like only he can do, Pete spoke to the imperative of uniting the country in the fight against climate change. “We are going to have to tax carbon.”

As President, Pete will set the goal of becoming a net-zero emissions society by no later than 2050. To help make that happen, he’ll enact a tax on carbon and use the revenue to send rebates to Americans -- with dividends being progressive and benefiting lower- and middle-class households foremost.

“It’s going to require national action. This is why the human species invented government. It’s for dealing with issues that are too big for each of us to deal with on our own.”

We all have a role to play in preventing a climate catastrophe. Pete will mobilize the federal government to quadruple clean energy R&D funding, make clean energy investments to create 3 million new jobs, and end subsidies for fossil fuel companies.

On reducing the influence of fossil fuel corporations: “If the only way we can clear that up is with a constitutional amendment to reverse Citizens United, then that’s what we’re going to have to do.”

Fighting climate change isn’t just an economic or scientific effort. It’s a political one. It’s about how we treat each other. And it will take harnessing political power to ensure corporations that pollute our environment can’t block the bold action needed to save it.
