As the second wave of the pandemic sweeps through the world, fair and equal access to any Covid-19 vaccines, treatments and tests is crucial for all countries. But our current system is dominated by corporate monopolies and secrecy around research and know-how. Instead of keeping solutions under lock and key, we need global sharing based on solidarity.

The World Health Organization launched a global pooling mechanism in May. Proposed by Costa Rica, the Covid-19 Technology Access Pool (C-TAP) provides a global platform to facilitate open sharing of knowledge, data and intellectual property for all Covid-19 health tools.

This will enable all countries to freely or affordably access treatments and vaccines needed to save lives. And yet the UK government has not joined this pool.

On Friday the World Health Organization and the President of Costa Rica will be urging governments at the UN General Assembly to join the C-TAP. We need to build up public pressure on the UK government to join. This pool will help to prevent corporate monopolies, expand manufacturing capacity and ensure affordable prices for all countries.
