In the latest episode of our Sounds Like Hate podcast – released today – we return to Randolph Union High School in Vermont. Communities nationwide are erupting in protest over the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others by police and vigilantes, and Randolph is no exception. The episode opens at a “We Demand Change” march through the town, organized by Randolph Union alumna Brittney Malik.

Meanwhile, another student, Zi Booska, has received a sinister warning from a fellow student’s parent, demanding that he cease the student campaign to fly the Black Lives Matter flag at school and change the school’s mascot. That mascot, the Galloping Ghost, is a hooded figure on a white horse – an image that bears an uneasy resemblance to the KKK members lionized in the racist, pro-Confederate film The Birth of a Nation, as Principal T. Elijah Hawkes points out.
