Predator species include animals like wolves, bears, panthers, orcas and even
sea otters. They sit at the top of the food chain in their habitat, helping to
keep their ecosystem in check. When these keepers of nature’s balance disappear,
the results can be disastrous for a whole range of species.

When wolves were wiped out in Yellowstone National Park, elk populations
exploded. The elk devoured plants that other animals, from songbirds to beavers,
needed to survive.

It took the historic return of wolves to Yellowstone in 1995 to trigger a
cascade of changes that is restoring balance to the Park’s ecosystem. Beavers
returned, which in turn helped aquatic species. Vegetation along streams
rebounded, bringing more and more songbirds. Even bison populations rebounded.

That’s why wolves and other predator species are so necessary. But if we abandon them again, this deadly scenario could play out in ecosystems
