This pandemic has changed our way of life in ways we couldn’t have imagined –
and in ways you might not realise.

In just over a week, MPs will decide whether to re-enact a piece of legislation
that contain powers that would allow this Government to ban protests, strip back
social care, close borders and suspend elections.

Crisis for some Governments are used as opportunities to water down human rights
and restrict civil liberties.

This has happened here in the UK. Back in March the Government introduced the
Coronavirus Act – the biggest restriction on our individual and collective
freedoms in a generation.

This legislation could remain in place if MPs don’t act now.

The Act wrongly prioritises criminal justice over public health. It also puts
marginalised people at risk of further discrimination and abuse.

It must be scrapped.

The Coronavirus Act was rushed through Parliament in just one day – yet the
authoritarian measures it gives the Government are extraordinary.

Police have broad new powers to detain anyone who could be infectious. But the
Crown Prosecution Service has said that every single charge made under the Act
has been wrong.

The Act also makes it legal for local councils to strip back social care. At
least seven took advantage and stopped providing even the most basic care
services for disabled people in their areas.

It also creates dangerous restrictions on the right to protest and allows for
borders to be closed indefinitely and some elections suspended.

The Act has no end date, meaning these powers could remain in place well beyond
the pandemic. MPs must scrap the Act now to safeguard our rights.
