Friday’s tragic news of the passing of trailblazing Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was heartbreaking for so many reasons. Justice Ginsburg devoted her life to the legal fight for equality and justice for every American, and she remained committed to doing right and making a difference up until her final days at the age of 87.

With a seat now open on the Supreme Court just 44 days before the election, the fate of the Supreme Court is on the line. And with the Supreme Court hearing a challenge to the Affordable Care Act just eight days after the election, so is the fate of our health care.

The truth is, if Congress had done its job, millions of Americans’ access to affordable health care coverage would not have been on the shoulders of one Supreme Court justice. But today, the Affordable Care Act is under attack like never before by Jaime Herrera Beutler and Republicans in Congress, and by this president in the courts, and it could be completely overturned by the Supreme Court with Trump’s nominee.

With the ACA at risk in the middle of a deadly pandemic, this is a time that calls for real leadership in the people’s house. And Jaime Herrera Beutler has proven time and again that she is not that leader — voting to support the lawsuit to dismantle health care in the midst of a pandemic.

Southwest Washingtonians deserve a representative ready and willing to not only defend the current health care law, but work to make it better. But instead, Herrera Beutler stands by the Trump administration’s lawsuit to repeal the ACA when Americans are counting on it more than ever before.

The next 44 days are absolutely critical, and this election is all the more important, with our health care system as we know it on the line.
