Dear Friend, Ruth Bader Ginsburg's dying wish was that her replacement not be confirmed until a new president has been installed.1 But Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has announced he will not respect that wish or his own precedent. Instead, he will hold a vote on Trump’s nominee.2 Since RBG's passing on Friday night, it has become clear that the best chance we have to prevent McConnell from helping Trump to install her replacement is for Democrats to bring all business in the Senate to a halt. We've flooded Senate offices with nearly 100,000 emails demanding that they do exactly that. But we need your help to dramatically ramp up this grassroots effort. If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately: It's ridiculous that McConnell is trying to rush through a Supreme Court nomination when he has forced the Senate to a crawl when it comes to the coronavirus relief bill. But this isn't just about stopping McConnell's hypocrisy. Everything we care about hangs in the balance. A 6-3 Trump majority on the Supreme Court means further erosion of voting rights, a massive expansion of corporate power, and likely the end of the Affordable Care Act and Roe v. Wade. A confirmation process starting right now would never provide the time to fully vet any nominee or provide a full picture of the person prior to a lifetime appointment. And it sets up a possible vote in the lame duck session after November—in other words, a Supreme Court justice might be confirmed by a Senate that has been voted out of office. It's a mockery of democracy. Our best hope to stop McConnell from stealing another Supreme Court seat for Trump is by blocking unanimous consent on everything that is moving through the Senate for the rest of the year. Senators can block every motion, force every bill to be read in full, and use a number of other tactics to shut down the Senate between now and the inauguration of the new president and new senators. It's a drastic measure, but these are dire times. Demand Progress members have already begun sending emails, making calls, taking to the streets, and doing everything possible to give senators the courage and political wherewithal to stop McConnell's last chance to stack the highest Court with right-wing extremism. But we can't sustain this over the coming weeks and months without your help. Please rush an emergency donation now to help stop Trump and McConnell from picking RBG's successor.
