Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a giant whose footsteps will echo throughout all of our lives.

The world is a better place because of her. She was soft-spoken and slight in stature, but she packed a mighty punch. She will always be a uniquely American icon – breaking barriers with courage and conviction, letting nothing stand in her way as she pursued equal justice under the law for all Americans.

And now we face the sad task of selecting Justice Ginsburg's successor. I cannot improve on what Mitch McConnell said after Justice Scalia's passing: "The American people must have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president."

With only 43 days until the election, there is no way that the U.S. Senate can or should act before the voters have made their voices heard.

If Republicans force a vote on a new Supreme Court justice before the election – a reckless and reprehensible move – then nothing is off the table.

Let's honor Justice Ginsburg's legacy by fighting harder than ever for the values she devoted her life to advancing.

Dick

P.S. At this moment, the importance of taking back the Senate for Democrats is clearer than ever. With the future of the Supreme Court hanging in the balance, we have to end Mitch McConnell's majority once and for all in this election. If you're able, please chip in today to support the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, the premier organization supporting strong Democratic candidates around the country and making high-impact investments in the races that will determine Senate control.
