The U.S. Constitution Does NOT Grant Citizenship to Children of Illegal Aliens.
President Trump says he would like to end this ridiculous practice. We agree. Let's get this done!

Dear John,
NumbersUSA has pressed Congress to pass a law ending automatic birthright citizenship for U.S.-born children of illegal aliens since our founding in 1996. Over five million U.S. born children of illegal aliens live in the United States. This does not count the millions more who are already grown. All of those children were granted citizenship automatically, and all of the benefits that citizenship entails.
Pew Study Finds 5 Million Children of Illegal Aliens in U.S.A.
Late last month, President Trump told reporters, "We're looking at that very seriously, birthright citizenship, where you have a baby on our land...[and] congratulations, the baby is now a U.S. citizen... It's frankly ridiculous."
The President started this public discussion last September when he said he would end automatic birthright citizenship for illegal aliens and tourists, when he said: "It was always told to me that you needed a constitutional amendment... but now they're saying I can do it just with an executive order."
We strongly agreed with him. We still do. We're thrilled that tens of millions of Americans -- including Pres. Trump -- have learned that we don't need a Constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship. In fact, our own Google polling shows that 58% of Americans support ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal aliens.
But the President did say it would take an act of Congress to make any changes permanent. WE NEED A LAW!
Having a majority of Americans, or even of registered voters, on our side isn't enough. We need action from Washington. And we need your financial support to continue changing minds and making that action happen.

Taking the issue mainstream has been a decades-long goal of NumbersUSA. The mainstream media routinely presents "experts" to say that the 14th Amendment requires giving citizenship automatically to everyone born in this country, even if their parents are here illegally.
We disagree. So did the author of the 14th Amendment, Sen. Jacob Howard of Michigan. Here's how the senator argued for the amendment's passage on the floor of the U.S. Senate in 1866:
"This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of person."
The key is a clause in the 14th Amendment which newspapers tend to skip over: "all persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof."
So if someone is born subject to a foreign power, they are not inherently citizens of the United States. And no Act of Congress has ever granted them citizenship!
When the President first brought up the matter last fall, our Chris Chmielenski wrote a blog outlining two major steps the President could do on his order. As Chris put it:
"One way Pres. Trump could end birthright citizenship through executive order is by exercising the administrative authority granted to him by Article II of the Constitution...
"Using his administrative authority, Pres. Trump could simply order the Social Security Administration to issue Social Security numbers and the Department of State to issue passports only to children born in the United States with at least one parent who is a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident."
Of course, it's great news that the President is considering ending birthright citizenship. If he makes the needed changes, Congress will get involved. Only Congress can make executive actions stick from one administration to another. Again, we need a law.
NumbersUSA, with the help of our 9 million followers just like you, must continue and even greatly increase the pressure on Congress. We provide these tools to members:
1) We provide and deliver pre-written email and faxes from our members to Congress. (Members like you have sent more than 70 million of these over the years.)
2) Our phone banks where we connect tens of thousands of NumbersUSA members to their members of Congress. (This is how we shut down the Senate switchboard a few years ago.)
3) We also provide immigration gradecards on every member of Congress, giving detailed information on every action the Congressmen and Congresswomen have taken. (This includes all their actions on ending automatic birthright citizenship.)
4) Of course, we also directly lobby for these common sense reforms on Capitol Hill. (Our people are the best.)
All these tools are free of charge to our millions of members. But they are EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE for NumbersUSA Action, which pays all these bills.
Don't you want to end automatic birthright citizenship? Do you want us to give Americans use of our system without charge? Then help us! Millions are benefitted, but we need tens of thousands of members like you to make gifts so we can continue and expand our mission.
Frankly, we are behind on funds to Action at this time, even though members and major donors recently raised over $200,000 in our match campaign. (Thank you, generous donors!) We need thousands of additional gifts to meet our bare bones needs.
Will you give? Literally, the future of America hangs in the balance. Please donate today.
You can donate three ways:
1) On-line, via our web page, using your credit card or Paypal. [link removed]
2) Check -- see the instructions and a form to print out and send with your check.
3) Call (703) 816-8820 to arrange a wire transfer, stock donation, or to make a credit card donation over the phone. If our office is closed, please leave the time and your phone number and we will call back.
