Hi John,
The historic Hurricane Dorian tore through the Bahamas and up Florida’s Atlantic coast this week, disrupting and destroying lives. We're certainly feeling the storm's wrath here at PAWS Chicago.
Our Florida-based rescue partner spent a frantic week clearing high kill shelters for evacuation ahead of the storm - with plans to send us dozens of dogs and cats by the end of this week, depending when rescue vans can leave Florida safely! As usual, PAWS Chicago's efforts focus on pets who had already been in the shelter before Dorian hit.
We continue to pull dogs and cats locally from Chicago Animal Care & Control, so Florida pets stretch our capacity - and our budget.
Animals rescued from natural disasters are often traumatized, sometimes injured, and all need immediate medical care. We know several of the Florida rescues have heartworm, which requires months of medicine and foster care. We suspect ringworm will also arrive with the pets.

Adoption counselors help people help their new pets. They set adopters up for a successful transition by offering guidance and tips for bringing your new pet home. Whether you’re an experienced adopter or a first-time pet owner, adopters leave their counseling session equipped with all the tools they’ll need to acclimate their pet into their family.
