Cast your votes in the final round of Green America's People & Planet Award for small green businesses. Since 2012, the People & Planet Award has recognized outstanding small businesses with deep commitments to social justice and environmental sustainability.

This project has been made possible thanks to a special donor committed to giving a boost to innovative entrepreneurs. The People & Planet Award has bestowed $300,000 on green businesses since its inception, and in this final round of the award we're celebrating the "best of the green economy."

Bennet Compost’s goal is to make composting easy and accessible for households and businesses in the Philadelphia area. Currently, Bennett Compost picks up from 2000+ households and businesses every week, keeping over 52 tons of material out of the landfill every month.

Dean's Beans

For over two decades Dean’s Beans’ mission has been clear: To use high quality specialty coffee as a vehicle for progressive change throughout the coffeelands of Asia, Africa and the Americas. The company does this through activism, ecological responsibility and innovative direct development programs with our cooperative partners. All whole bean specialty coffees are certified organic, fair trade, and kosher, and are roasted in small batches in Orange, MA.

Ink Forest Eco-Friendly Screen Printing
Oak Forest, IL

Ink Forest is a women-owned screen printing company that is also Certified Green with Green America. Ink Forest prints with only water based inks. Water based inks do not contain PVC’s and Phthalates that are found in conventional screen printing inks. Water based inks require only water and soybean based solvents for clean up. Conventional inks require Benzene and Toluene for clean up. Ink Forest’s printing process is safer for the shirt wearer and the environment.

Planted Table is the first zero waste meal delivery service the Ca Bay Area. Not only do they deliver meals in reusable glass containers, but they also work out deals with farmers and food suppliers to not deliver anything that comes in single-use plastic and to take back the boxes they deliver the food in so they can reuse them. They volunteer teaching zero waste practices to local school children and any unused food gets donated to local homeless shelters. All food is vegan.

Sustainable Events, LLC

Sustainable Events is dedicated to advancing sustainability within the meetings & events industry. Since 2015, founder Julia Spangler has worked to increase sustainability education within the central Indiana events community, as well as nationally and globally. By working hands-on at a wide variety of events ranging greatly in size and format, she developed a scalable, transferable zero waste event planning process. She uses this process to implement waste diversion programs at events throughout central Indiana, as well as to consult with events located across the country. Since 2015, Sustainable Events has helped events keep over 35,000 pounds of waste out of the landfill. All events have achieved a waste diversion rate of at least 50%, with most events achieving over 70% and 4 events achieving 90%+ waste diversion, which qualifies them as "zero waste" events.
