Dear John,

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was a true hero in the fight for justice for all Americans. She was, simply put, a legend and pioneer. Her valiant battle with pancreatic cancer was emblematic of her strength, perseverance, and unflinching commitment to justice. Her work—her life—must serve as a call to action for all who believe in a more equal society.

Justice Ginsburg came to prominence as a trailblazing lawyer for women’s rights, but she fought for all Americans throughout her career and on the Supreme Court. One of her most notable and fiery dissents was at the age of 80 in response to the Court’s decision to strike down part of the Voting Rights Act: "One would expect more from an opinion striking at the heart of the Nation’s signal piece of civil-rights legislation."

Through many opinions and dissents, Justice Ginsburg advanced equality in a way many now take for granted. We must honor that work and continue it.

As recently as a few days ago, Justice Ginsburg’s "most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."

Now is not the time for a partisan battle over the next nomination for the Supreme Court. People have already begun to vote—a sacred right Justice Ginsburg fought to protect. The next president must nominate a future justice and the next Congress must consider that nominee.

We started fighting from the moment McConnell laid out his pitch for an immediate nomination. We know the stakes for Roe, for the ACA and for our democracy, and that is why CAP is devoting new resources to the Supreme Court battle. We need your help.

Rest in power, Justice Ginsburg. We’ll take the fight from here.
