QUOTE OF THE WEEK
"The implied terms of the racial contract are visible everywhere for those willing to see them... Poor European immigrants who flocked to an America with virtually no immigration restrictions came ‘the right way’; poor Central American immigrants evading a baroque and unforgiving system are gang members and terrorists."
– Adam Sewer of The Atlantic, ”The Coronavirus Was an Emergency Until Trump Found Out Who Was Dying." [[link removed]]

In
March,
the
American
Immigration
Council
warned
that
people
held
in
ICE
detention
centers
faced
a
high
risk
of
contracting
COVID-19.
The
Council
filed
a
FOIA
request
to
obtain
records
on
ICE
procedures
to
ensure
the
safety
of
detainees.
But
the
agency
never
responded.
Due
to
the
lack
of
responsiveness,
the
Council
has
now
sued
ICE.

The
Migrant
Protection
Protocols
have
caused
a
humanitarian
catastrophe
by
forcing
tens
of
thousands
of
people
to
wait
for
their
asylum
hearings
in
inhumane
conditions
in
Mexico.
However,
there
is
little
public
information
on
the
program.
The
Council’s
lawsuit
aims
to
bring
those
records
to
light.

ICE
can
and
does
release
people
subject
to
"mandatory
detention"
under
the
law.
An
amicus
brief
filed
by
the
Council
provides
case
examples
of
when
ICE
has
voluntarily
done
so,
despite
claims
to
the
contrary.
The
agency
should
use
all
available
options
to
minimize
the
risk
of
COVID-19.
