Judge me by the content of my character, not the color of my skin

Fellow Conservative,

Since giving my speech at the Republican National Convention, the response from grassroots conservatives has been nothing short of incredible.

Folks from coast to coast have stepped up to join our movement and given generously to help fight for the soul of our nation.

Unfortunately, after sharing my story of cotton to Congress in one lifetime, the radical Left and some in the media started viciously attacking me.

You see, they hate to hear a Black Republican speaking about what it means to live the American Dream, so all they see is the color of my skin.

And even worse, they try to use it as a weapon to attack me for my conservative beliefs.

Democrats and the media only seem to care about identity politics, the view that you should pick your political party based on the color of your skin.

Let me be clear: standing up for my conservative beliefs is no burden.

I am proud of standing for our values and I won’t let the far Left or anyone else silence me.

Fellow Conservative, the attacks I face nearly every single day on social media and in the press are deeply offensive. But they pale in comparison to the injustices faced by my grandfather and generations before him.

His story and journey inspire me every day to ensure that we provide future generations the best opportunities to succeed—regardless of skin color.

You may be asking yourself, how does a poor black kid from a single parent household run for Congress and win a race against both a Thurmond and the namesake of South Carolina’s most popular governor, Carroll Campbell?

The answer is that an overwhelmingly white district judged me on the content of my character, not the color of my skin.

That is the America I know and love. The America that judges you based on what you say and do, not how you look.

That is the America we are fighting for every single day.
