In light of the passing of Justice Ginsburg last night, we invited a guest contributor to write our email today. Susan is a long-time volunteer with Vote From Home 2020 who is intrinsically tied to our organization -- both as someone who loves our mission and second because her son, Ben, is one of our Co-Founders. Most importantly though, we thought it would be appropriate to have a conversation, volunteer-to-volunteer, from someone who is not only deeply committed to our cause and inspired us but who has looked up to heroes like Ruth Bader Ginsburg since the feminist fights of the 1970's. -- The Vote From Home 2020 Team
John,
Friday evening’s news broke our hearts. I’m sure many, maybe most of you spent Friday night just I did, mourning the great jurist, feminist, and guardian of democracy we were blessed to have among us on the bench, on the beachhead, of justice in America.
No one will ever hold the same place Ruth Bader Ginsburg did, not on that bench, not in American history, and certainly not in our hearts. She fought so many battles on our behalf. Last night, I felt like a child, abandoned, uncertain, scared, and alone. The corruption of the present administration that we’ve been working so hard to end seemed to have triumph within reach. The Court still, even after the outrageous denial of Obama’s nominee, continued to represent for many of us the ideals and standards of justice you and I have been fighting to keep alive. On Friday night, it felt like all that was gone.
Last night we indulged in despair and maybe anger. But today, yes, we rise. I'm asking you to sign up for a volunteer shift with Vote From Home 2020 so we can get Trump out of the White House and restore dignity to our country.
Make no mistake. They are not going to relinquish power gracefully. So we must fight. We must be RBG warriors. Justice Ginsburg was not “just” a feminist. She was an American hero. She fought for justice. So must we.
How? Well, as a veteran of the protests of another era who came of age on other streets heavy with tear gas and as the mother of members of a new generation of democratic activists, I will work such a margin of victory in the November election that no Republican cabal can withstand the scrutiny of the moment and of history. I have been texting and calling voters under the experienced guidance of Vote From Home 2020 for several months now. I will do more.
I hope you will join me. Every ending is also a beginning. This is a time for starting anew, with renewed vigor and sense of purpose. This is our nation, our moment to rise together, like a tide.
Now is the time to roll up your sleeves and spend some time volunteering in Justice Ginsburg's honor.
If you can spare a few more dollars, dig deep and chip in another $25 so Vote From Home 2020 can send even more applications to swing state voters.
The legacy of Justice Bader is this: One woman, utterly determined, can make a very real difference. Think what we can do together. Let’s roll.
