Heartbroken is the only word I could muster when I heard the news about Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg last night.
RBG was a giant -- a living legend, a trailblazer, and a tireless, fearless champion of our rights. What she achieved in her 87 years in the pursuit of justice and equality puts her in the pantheon of true American heroes. She was a legal visionary, leaving an undeniable impact on issues we all care deeply about -- from voting rights to LGBTQ equality to reproductive rights. Justice Ginsburg was a leader in the fight for women’s equality and her commitment to justice for all ran deep. When she was asked when there would be enough women on the Supreme Court, she responded, “When there are nine.”
The passing of such an iconic figure as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, especially right now, is an incalculable loss -- and she will be deeply missed.
Whatever you’re feeling in this moment is justified. I’ve talked to friends who are devastated and terrified about what the future holds. I know many folks are angry, too -- particularly because Republicans didn’t wait even two hours before insisting that they will move quickly to replace her on the court.
Here’s what I know: What happens next isn’t written in stone. What happens next is up to us. And I’m ready to fight like hell -- it’s the best way I know to honor Justice Ginsburg’s legacy.
You don’t need me to tell you that this election, which was already among the most important in our lifetimes, is even more critical today. The issues we care so much about -- women’s rights, immigrants' rights, health care, our very democracy itself -- are at stake this year in a way that can’t be overstated.
That’s true up and down the ballot -- we must send people to Congress who will fight for us.
