The tragic passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a loss to our country. Last night we felt it on an individual level, as Americans across the country dealt with sadness and uncertainty -- because the makeup of the Supreme Court has a very real, tangible impact on our lives.

For rural Americans, that impact has been painful. Throughout recent history, the Court has dismantled protections for small farmers and may imperil their access to health care through the Affordable Care Act.

The senators we elect in November may have the power to determine who fills Justice Ginsburg’s seat. We know that the next occupant of that seat will be called to decide on issues like the future of the Affordable Care Act -- without which many rural families would lose access to health care when they need it most. Put simply: the next justice will either betray rural communities, or speak up for America’s heartland. We must ensure that the senators who confirm this nomination are accountable to rural communities.
