Hi John,
Our leaders have used the pandemic to mount an all-out assault on reproductive rights.
While headlines were dominated by the state’s spiking case numbers, Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a law in June requiring minors to receive written consent from a parent or guardian before they can access abortion services. The law is a blatant attack not only on reproductive freedom, but also on people of color and undocumented immigrants -- who will be disproportionately punished by this dangerous restriction.
In the same month, the Mississippi legislature passed a so-called “reason ban,” a law that requires abortion care providers to evaluate a patient’s motive for seeking an abortion -- and to refuse care if the reason is deemed invalid.
Utah, Indiana, and Okalahoma have enacted “TRAP” laws -- Targeted Restrictions on Abortion Providers that impose medically-unneccesaary requirements on caregivers. Starting next year, Indiana will also require a mandatory 18-hour waiting period after an ultrasound before abortion care is allowed.
The list goes on. But all these actions have one thing in common -- they’re examples of our leaders using their power to chip away at human dignity and human rights.
We must fight back. And we are -- by supporting legislation like the Put Patients First Act, which would prohibit health care providers from refusing care on the basis of their personal beliefs. We’re fighting for the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would ban mandatory ultrasounds and waiting periods like Indiana’s. And we’re pushing for the Access to Birth Control Act -- which would ensure timely access to contraception and allow women to make more deliberate choices about their family planning in the first place.
But none of these bills have yet become law. That’s because they’re being opposed by powerful special interests on the far-right, many of them religious organizations, who see no issue with restricting human rights as long as they get to see their ideological agenda come to fruition.
People with zero regard for the well-being of our citizens shouldn’t be the ones pulling the strings of government. But unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening. The Center for Freethought Equality exists to protect Americans from attacks like these -- and our goal is to do everything we can to reverse the anti-choice laws on the books and replace them with legislation that safeguards reproductive freedom. But our advocacy efforts go further when we have a budget to match. That’s why we’re setting a goal right now: to raise $2,500 before midnight so we can redouble our efforts to combat these draconian measures and protect the health of our citizens.
We’re reaching out to you because we know you’re an ally of reproductive justice. We know the war on abortion rights scares and infuriates you as much as it does us. And right now, we need your help.
Please, if you want to keep abortion safe and legal -- if you want to roll back these regressive policies and replace them with laws that protect the right to choose for Americans all across the country -- help us reach our fundraising goal so we can better fight against this human rights onslaught. Thank you so much for helping us win the battle for reproductive rights in America. Thank you for taking a stand against the undue influence of the religious right. Thank you for making this country a safer and more progressive place.
