** Statement On The Supreme Court Vacancy
------------------------------------------------------------

The New York Republican Club calls on President Donald J Trump to nominate and the Senate to confirm a new Supreme Court justice immediately.

Heading into a tumultuous and highly contested presidential election, our nation requires a full bench to opine on legal questions should they arise in an election that has already presented novel issues due to the pandemic in voting and the election process. To preserve the integrity of our elections, a hallmark of healthy, functioning republics, we ask the president to exercise his constitutional duty.

** Partnership With Konservativa Förbundet
------------------------------------------------------------

The New York Young Republican Club, the largest and oldest Young Republican chapter in the United States, is proud to announce a partnership with Konservativa Förbundet, a nonpartisan student organization focused on expanding conservative views among Swedish youth. This partnership will foster cultural exchange by providing networking opportunities and offering members of each organization the opportunity to learn about the political and social climate in which the other operates.

Sweden and the United States have a shared history that manifests in both philosophical and tangible forms. In 1766, Sweden became the first country to abolish censorship and guarantee freedom of the press. A descendent of that Enlightenment-era law, the Freedom of the Press Act (Tryckfrihetsförordningen), now serves as part of Sweden’s uncodified constitution. The United States followed Sweden in embracing freedom of the press with the 1791 ratification of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution.

While leftist Swedish governments have instituted laws banning “hate speech” in recent years, Sweden remains a bastion of free speech and expression in the ever-more-restrictive European Union. Students and youth have a unique perspective on such restrictions given the blatant radicalization of universities in recent decades. The New York Young Republican Club and Konservativa Förbundet will discuss how best to combat unjust restrictions on students’ rights and will call attention to the issue as it arises, as the New York Young Republican Club did recently for Austin Tong.

Swedish immigrants formed a backbone of settlement in large parts of the United States, particularly the Midwest. By 1910, 1.4 million first- and second-generation Swedish immigrants lived in the United States, and they left an indelible mark on the frontier, which they settled, and great cities like Chicago. Swedish Americans like John Nordstrom and Oscar Frederick Mossberg built companies that retain strong reputations. Although use of the Swedish language fell during World War I as Swedish immigrants and their immediate descendants assimilated into American society, Swedish Americans today maintain strong cultural institutions, and the influence of early Swedish immigrants in the productive development of the United States cannot be understated.

In the 21st century, Sweden and the United States share a deep economic bond. US companies are highly represented in Sweden, and Swedish companies, particularly retailers like H&M and IKEA, have a major presence in Americans’ lives. At the same time, both countries face challenges incumbent on highly developed service economies. While Swedish immigrants to the United States in the 19th century arrived legally and immediately worked hard (e.g., by settling virgin land or building railroads), Sweden and the United States today suffer from an influx of low-skilled workers who seek not to work but rather to survive off our respective countries’ welfare and social services. This unsustainable trend cannot continue, and the New York Young Republican Club looks forward to enhancing dialogue on the topic in conjunction with Konservativa Förbundet.

In addition, the New York Young Republican Club pledges to defend the rights of Swedish Americans and expatriate Swedes to exercise their cultural heritage in a proud and unabashed manner. While Midsummer New York 2020 was canceled due to the ongoing pandemic, we look forward to this annual event returning to Battery Park City in 2021.
