[[link removed]]John,
Polar bears depend on habitat in the Coastal Plain of the Arctic National
Wildlife Refuge to den and give birth to their cubs.
But the Department of Interior plans to open up 1.6 million acres in this crown
jewel of wildlife refuges for oil and gas development. We cannot let that happen.
Tell your members of Congress to demand the withdrawal of this disastrous plan
and protect polar bears.

TAKE ACTION

Scores of scientific studies have shown that oil and gas drilling in this
pristine region would have devastating effects on wildlife populations and
exacerbate climate change impacts.
Just a few of the threats: Seismic testing can prompt mother bears to abandon
their dens. Massive trucks weighing 20 tons or more will crush Arctic tundra. A
maze of roads and drilling pads will scar the landscape. And a web of
above-ground pipelines will pose a constant threat of toxic leaks and spills.
The Coastal Plain within the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the most
important area in the United States for polar bears to give birth and nurse
their cubs. These land-based denning sites have become vital as the availability
of sea ice for denning has declined due to climate change.
John, please ask your members of Congress to
stop this dangerous plan so that polar bears—along with caribou, muskoxen, and
hundreds of species of migratory birds that depend on the refuge—will continue
to survive and thrive.
