John—
As I wrote to you below — last night we mourned. Today we start to fight.
We’ll be joining our friends from Indivisible, Demand Justice, Center for Popular Democracy, and other groups for a vigil on the steps of the Supreme Court tonight at 7:30pm to honor Ruth Bader Ginsburg and to call on the Senate to honor her dying wish not to be replaced until the next president is inaugurated. When we stand together, in our conviction and commitment to freedom and justice, we are a force more powerful than their craven power grab — that’s why we’re inviting all NARAL members in the DC area to meet us at the Court for this (socially distanced) vigil as we mourn and honor her legacy. Bring a friend and wear a mask.

John—
Devastation just doesn’t cover it. Earlier tonight, we received the news we hoped would never come: Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away from complications related to pancreatic cancer.
When I heard, I was just sitting down for Rosh Hashanah dinner with my family — celebrating the Jewish holiday meant to usher in a new year. A fresh start. But without her formidable presence on the Court, it’s hard to imagine what this new year might bring. This marks a new chapter in an already difficult fight, and it’s a heavy load to bear.
In the Jewish tradition, a person who dies on Rosh Hashanah is a tzadik — a person of great righteousness. I can think of no better descriptor for RBG.
My faith and my traditions, like so many, teach us that we cannot shy away from doing the work to bring about justice. That’s exactly what Justice Ginsburg always did, and that’s the only way I know to honor her immeasurable legacy.
The world is much, much worse without her presence, her integrity, and her grit. A brilliant legal scholar, she served for 27 years as a tireless defender of reproductive freedom on the Supreme Court. Time and again, she stepped up for us to protect our most fundamental freedoms. Now we’re being called to step up in a new way.
Tonight we mourn. Tomorrow we fight. I’ll be in touch soon about what that fight will look like and how you can take part — keep your eyes peeled.
May her memory be a blessing, and may we fight like hell to honor her legacy.
